Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science (UROPS)

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science (UROPS) provides students with the opportunity to undertake independent research under faculty supervision. Students can explore topics beyond the standard curriculum and gain exposure to the process of academic inquiry. UROPS courses coded under the Department of Statistics and Data Science (DSDS) must have a strong emphasis on statistics and/or data science. Participation in UROPS also deepens students’ critical thinking, communication skills, and research experience, providing valuable preparation for future careers and postgraduate studies.
Interested students can either initiate discussion with faculty staff or browse the list of projects on the Faculty of Science’s website to explore projects that are still available. Eligible UROPS students should have:

1) completed at least 1 regular semester of study (20 units)
2) attained GPA of 3.00 or higher 3) read and passed ST1131
4) ensured that they are’ not precluded (see NUSMODS page: ST2288) |
1) completed at least 3 regular semesters of study (60 units) (for Cohorts 21/22 and after)
2) attained GPA of 3.00 or higher 3) declared a primary major in ST
4) ensured that they are not precluded (see NUSMODS page: ST3288) |
1) completed at least 3 regular semesters of study (60 units) (for Cohorts 21/22 and after)

If the supervisor is from another department, a DSDS faculty member must be appointed as the co-supervisor. |

If the supervisor is not from DSDS, a DSDS faculty member must be appointed as co-supervisor. |
Where the proposed supervisor is not from DSDS, students should ensure that the supervisor is willing to have the project administered and registered under the appropriate DSDS UROPS course code, instead of a course code offered by the supervisor’s home department.

| Written Report | 50% | Typical thesis length: about 30–35 pages (excluding front/back matter, figures, tables) |
| Oral Presentation (face-to-face) |
30% | The presentation is expected to be 40 minutes. |
| Question & Answer (Q&A) |
20% | The Q&A will take place immediately after the oral presentation. The supervisor will chair the Q&A, and its purpose is to assess the student’s depth of understanding of the project. The Q&A is expected to be about 30 minutes. |
