ST4288 & DSA4288(x) are single-semester, 8‑unit honours project courses offered by the Department of Statistics and Data Science (DSDS). DSA4288M/DSA4288S can be completed as part of the Data Science and Analytics specialisations in Operations Research and Statistical Methodology respectively.

The objectives of the honours project are to allow students to develop skills for independent research in statistics, data science and related fields, and the application of novel data-driven strategies for solving scientific and business problems. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the current state of knowledge in a particular field of research, master the techniques required for the study of a research question, and communicate research findings clearly and concisely in written and spoken English.

Please note that students are not allowed to register for an honours project course if they are on an accredited NUS internship.

If the supervisor is from DSDS or the Math Department, no co-supervisor is required.  

 

If the supervisor is from another department, a DSDS faculty member must be appointed as the co-supervisor. 
ST4288  If the supervisor is not from DSDS, a DSDS faculty member must be appointed as co-supervisor. 

Where the proposed supervisor is not from DSDS, students should ensure that the supervisor is willing to have the project administered and registered under the appropriate DSDS Honours Project course code, instead of a course code offered by the supervisor’s home department.

 

 

Students will be assessed based on the following components:

Written Report 50% Typical thesis length: about 30–35 pages (excluding front/back matter, figures, tables)
Oral Presentation
(face-to-face)		 30% The presentation is expected to be 40 minutes.
Question & Answer
(Q&A)		 20% The Q&A will take place immediately after the oral presentation. The supervisor will chair the Q&A, and its purpose is to assess the student’s depth of understanding of the project. The Q&A is expected to be about 30 minutes.

Year 4 students will be notified of the Honours Project application period via email.  

 

Interested students are to initiate discussions with faculty staff that they wish to work with (there is no master list of Honours Projects for DSDS).

Project Application 

Students are to submit application via a form provided in the announcement email. 

 

Week 1  

Official Start of Project 

Upon confirmation of enrolment, students may start the project. 

Week 10 

Preparation for Oral Presentation 

1. Students to finalise Week 13’s presentation date and time with supervisor

 

2. Students to fill in venue allocation form 

By 4pm of the Friday, Week 12 of the Semester 

Thesis Submission 

Students are to submit their thesis (PDF format) on Canvas. 

Week 13 

Oral Presentations and Q&A 

Students are to conduct their oral presentations and attend other students’ oral presentations.
