The Department of Statistics and Applied Probability (DSAP) was established in 1 April 1998 and renamed to Department of Statistics and Data Science (DSDS) on 1 July 2021 with the goals to advance research and education in statistics and data science. The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Statistics and in Data Science and Analytics. In addition, DSDS also offers MSc and PhD degrees.

Honours students have the options to specialize in Data Science by taking modules in Data Mining and Multivariate Statistical Analysis, or to specialize in Finance and Business Statistics by taking modules in Actuarial Statistics and Statistical Methods for Finance. In this programme, students will learn about the collection, analysis and visualization of data, in areas such as business, transportation, public policy, medicine and healthcare.
Bachelor of Science (Honours) with Major in Data Science and Analytics.
The four-year direct Honours programme is designed to prepare graduates who are ready to acquire, manage and explore data that will inspire change around the world. Students will read modules in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, and be exposed to the interplay between these three key areas in the practice of data science.
MSc in Statistics
This programme is designed to equip students with advanced knowledge of statistical principles and methods required by practicing statisticians, and is focused on developing their skills in applied statistics. It is intended for students with a Bachelor's degree in a related field of statistics, and for professionals who are interested in the application of statistics. Classes are conducted in the evenings during the university semesters.
MSc in Data Science for Sustainability
The programme is to train data scientists who can integrate their knowledge and skills with an understanding of sustainability issues. It is intended for students with a Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative related fields such as Mathematics, Engineering, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, or Economics, etc. The demand for professionals with skills in the field of both robust data science and sustainability is increasing rapidly. The growing demand opens exciting and diverse career opportunities. Our programme is designed to equip graduates with the necessary technical and analytical abilities to effectively meet the demand.
