Graduation Requirements

Announcements

To graduate from the College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) with a major in Statistics/Data Science and Analytics, you will have to complete one of the following:

  • Undergraduate Research Opportunities in Science (UROPS)
  • Undergraduate Professional Internship Program (UPIP)
  • Final Year Project (FYP)
  • NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC)

The above courses are designed to provide you with practical experience in the disciplines.

UROPS and FYP are more research-intensive. They provide you with an opportunity to delve into a research topic, supervised by a faculty member from DSDS. Upon graduation, statisticians and data scientists continually read up and learn new techniques; these course codes are opportunities to practice those skills.

UPIP and NOC allow you to work in companies. These courses provide you with an introduction to workplace culture and afford you the opportunities to practise your communication and collaboration skills, and to apply your knowledge from school onto real-life problems.

UROPS

For UROPS courses, please refer to the FoS website for complete and updated information. The deliverable at the end of UROPS is a course report, graded by the supervisor.

UPIP
Internships under UPIP are self-sourced. For full information about the application procedure, please refer to this FoS website.
To ensure that you have sufficient time to contribute in your courses *and* in your internship, the department has a policy for UPIP. Please refer to this page (see section on Study Advice) for more information.

FYP
FYPs are also self-sourced. FYP can be done in either Semester 1 or Semester 2, but you must have fulfilled the pre-requisites.
To embark on these projects, discuss with a faculty member regarding the possibility. You may propose your own project or inquire if the faculty member has any projects they are working on. Once agreed, send your application to the department before Friday of Week 1 of the semester.

The FYP will be graded on:
  • The report. This will be graded on the dimensions:
    • Completeness, cohesiveness, appropriateness (for a final-year ST /DSA major), quality of literature survey, quality of data analysis, mathematical analysis, quality of coding/computational work, and original contributions.
  • Oral presentation, based on:
    • Quality of delivery, content/organisation of presentation material, and audience awareness.
  • Q&A session, based on:
    • Depth of understanding of own work, ability to connect to broader topics, independent thought, and ability to handle unanticipated questions.

NOC
NOC is a prestigious and competitive program that provides you with the opportunity to intern at an overseas company. For complete details, please refer to this page.
