Course Objectives

In today’s highly dynamic business environment, companies in virtually every industry are looking to transform data into actionable business insights. Having the suitable data and analytical skills provides an unbeatable edge. This course provides an overview of intermediate concepts and tools one will need throughout the data science pipeline, preparing participants to tackle data analytics challenges. It builds on the foundations gained in Data Analytics Begins with Me.

Throughout the two-day course, participants will learn about the main concepts and tools in a data scientist’s toolbox. We will first revisit the basic analytical methods covered in Data Analytics Begins with Me and learn about how to further improve them. Then, we will introduce intermediate machine learning models and algorithms, such as principal component analysis and textual analysis. The goal is to better understand trends and, ultimately, translate data into actionable knowledge.

To demonstrate the application of these algorithms and reinforce the skills attained, there will be a focus on practical methods that leverage the data analytics software, Orange. During the hands-on sessions, we will walk through the best practices in data analytics.

At the end of the two-day course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the best practices for data science workflows.
• Acquire a deeper understanding of the basic machine learning models to gain additional insights into your data.
• Learn about intermediate machine learning models and algorithms, including regression, classification, clustering, and principal component analysis, and text analysis.
• Apply these learning models through hands-on sessions.
• Analyse datasets that hold real-world implications.

FAQs

Course Registration

1. When does the registration close?

Registration will close two weeks before commencement date or when the registration is full, whichever earlier. You’ll be placed on wait-list once the registration has reached maximum capacity. You’ll be notified 1 week before course commences if you managed to secure a placement. If you do not hear from us, your placement is unsuccessful.

2. How do I know if my registration has been submitted successfully?

An acknowledgement email will be sent to you.

3. I received the acknowledgement email. Does that mean that my place in the class is confirmed?

No. The acknowledgment email is to inform you that the registration is submitted successfully. Your registration is still required to be processed by the short course coordinator internally. Should you have any queries pertaining to your registration, or have any changes to be made, please email us.

4. Can I withdraw my application?

• • The short course coordinator must be notified in writing of all requests for withdrawals and deferment at least 7 days before the run.
  • If you have accepted the offer to a short course programme run, but find that you are unable to attend, you should notify us by writing to fos.shortcourses@nus.edu.sg.
  • Applicants may postpone participation and request for deferment to other course runs, subject to availability.
  • Requests for cancellation will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and refunds may be issued. 

Course Funding

1. What funding(s) is available for the courses?

Please refer to the ‘Course Fees’ section in the course brochure.

2. I am corporate/self-sponsored. Am I eligible for SSG Funding?

Yes. All Singapore Citizen/SPR attending SSG funded courses will be eligible for SSG Funding, provided you have not taken the same course before.

In addition, you must meet the criteria:

• • • Achieve a ‘Competent’ grade in all assessment(s)

3. How do I apply for SSG Funding?

The course fees will automatically be tabulated with the relevant SSG funding based on your eligibility. No action is required from the participant/company except to ensure that the participant meets the two criteria stated above.

4. I am self-sponsored. Can I use my SkillsFuture Credits to pay for the course fees?

Yes. Once an offer of placement has been granted for your application, you will have to accept the offer via L3AP and make the payment via your SkillsFuture credits. Payment is not required upfront during registration.

Payment

1. What are the modes of payment?

• • Visa, Mastercard, Amex or Alipay
  • PayNow (a QR code will be displayed during payment)
  • SkillsFuture credits (you will be required to submit an SFC claim upon making payment, you will be redirected to an external link for you to authenticate using Singpass on SFC website)
  • PSEA

2. When can I make the payment?

Once your registration has been processed and an offer of placement has been granted to you, you will receive an automated email for you to accept the offer on L3AP.

Once you have accepted the offer, you will be directed to the payment page. 

Assessment

1. Is there an assessment component for the course?

Yes. The mode of assessment is up to the CET instructor’s discretion. It may be a reflection paper, quiz, presentation, or based on classroom activities. You will be required to achieve a ‘Competent’ grade for the assessment(s).

2. What happens if I did not achieve a ‘Competent’ grade in my assessment?

You will be notified by the short course coordinator if you did not achieve “Competent” for the short course. You may be offered for a deferment for the next available class.

E-Certificate

1. Will I receive a certificate for the course?

An e-certificate will be issued upon successful completion within 20 working days.

2. Can I request a specific name to be on the e-certificate?

The name on the e-certificate will be issued according to the full name as per registration.
