Module Registration Period

 

7 Aug to 25 Aug 2017: Registration / Add Module

 

For Level 5000/6000 modules offered by Science, students are required to register online (including cross department modules) .

EXCEPTION : Statistics students are required to seek Statistics Department's approval for cross department modules. Statistics students are required to submit the Module Registration Form to the Statistics department.

EXEMPTION: MSc Quantitative Finance, Science Communication and Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students are exempted from this exercise as modules will be registered for them directly by the department. 



7 Aug to 25 Aug 2017 : Drop Module without Penalty

- For Level 5000/6000 modules offered by Science, students are required to drop the module online from 7 Aug to 25 Aug 2017. Students using the Module Drop Form should submit the forms to their home departments by 23 Aug 2017.

- For Level 4000 and below modules offered by Science, students are required to use the Module Drop Form.

- For Cross Faculty modules, students are required to use the Module Drop Form

 


26 Aug to 01 Oct 2017: Drop Module with "W" Grade

- Please use the Module Drop Form for all modules that you wish to drop.
W' grade is not a fail grade, it is an indication that you have dropped your module after choosing it. 



02 Oct 2017 Onwards: Drop Module with "F" Grade

- Please use the Module Drop Form for all modules that you wish to drop.
You will receive a Fail Grade for the module that you dropped.

Notes:
All modules taken are graded and counted towards your CAP. In the event where a student fails a module and has to retake it, the grades for both modules will be counted towards the student's CAP.

 

To continue in a Master's programme, a student may not have:

  • CAP below 3.0 (but more than 2.5) for three consecutive semesters; or
  • CAP below 2.5 for two consecutive semesters.

 

To continue in a PhD programme, a student may not have:

  • CAP below 3.5 (but more than 3.0) for three consecutive semesters; or
  • CAP below 3.0 for two consecutive semesters.


Students may choose to read additional modules over and above their module requirements. They may choose to take the additional modules (subject to department's approval) on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis (S/U) or audit basis.

'S/U' modules will appear on the student's transcript/result slip but will not be counted towards the student's CAP.

Students who audit a module need not sit for final examinations and will not receive a final grade. Audited modules will not appear on the student's transcript/result slip.

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that he/she is not registered for modules with clashes in class timetable or examination table. If you need any assistance regarding time table or module details, please refer to your department.

PhD Qualifying Examinations (QE)

PhD candidates are still required to sit for the PhD Qualifying Examination (QE) - 2 written and 1 oral examination. The QE should be taken before the end of the fourth semester from the time of admission. A second attempt may be taken no later than six months after the first, failed attempt. This applies to both full-time and part-time PhD candidates. Candidates who fail their PhD QE will graduate with a Master of Science.

(Cohorts matriculated in AY2010/2011 and before)
Written Exam - Based on 2 modules: ST5214 Advanced Probability Theory and ST5215 Advanced Statistical Theory.
Oral Exam - Students are required to present their research proposal to an oral panel committee.

 

(Cohorts matriculated in AY2011/2012 and after)
Written Exam - Based on 4 modules: (i) ST5214 Advanced Probability Theory, (ii) ST5215 Advanced Statistical Theory & ST5224 Advanced Statistical Theory II and (iii) ST5222 Advanced Topics in Applied Statistics. Students may choose 2 out of the 3 papers.
Oral Exam - Students are required to present their research proposal to an oral panel committee.

 

Note: Students can only take the oral exam after they have taken and passed the written examinations.

The QE is held twice a year - first or second week of each semester ie. in January and August. Students who wish to take the QE must email to Ms Su Kyi Win at least 1 month before the semester. The student must be prepared to sit for the QE in the same semester that he/she has informed the department.

 

Guidelines about Master Student taking PhD QE

1) Students in our Master program are allowed to take the PhD QE.

2) Passing the QE guarantee PhD admission but not the NUS Research Scholarship. The offer of scholarship will be subjected to availability of funding/quota.
Students must be aware made aware of this - Passing QE does not automatically mean that he/she gets a scholarship.

3) If an MSc student decides to graduate with a Masters degree after failing the QE once, but reapplies for the PhD program later, he/she will only be given one chance to take the QE during his PhD candidature.

Guidelines on Application for Financial Assistance to attend Conference

Please take note of the following guidelines set by our department’s Graduate Program Committee before you apply for financial assistance from department to attend conference:

1. The department encourages its qualified PhD students to attend ACADEMIC conferences to present their research work. The theme of conference must be relevant to the student's research work at NUS. The maximum of financial assistance by the department to each student is SGD2400 during the whole period of his/her PhD study.

2. A student must apply for the assistance successfully before registration for a conference and booking a flight ticket.

3. The application should be submitted to Graduate Program Committee of the department through Miss Su Kyi Win at General Office together with the following documents:

(a) Application for Financial Assistance to Attend Conference form with support from his/her supervisor , and

(b) evidence showing that he/she will present a paper in the conference (either in oral presentation or in poster presentation).


4. The graduate program committee gives higher priority to students who are more senior or attend bigger conferences.

5. Please apply for conference leave using attach “Leave Application Form for Research Scholars” before you submit the financial assistance for attending conference form to us.
