Statistics Learning Centre
The centre is set up to help students who are reading any ST1000-level module, ST2131 and ST2334. Our experienced professors, assisted by our graduate students, are there to help students to clear their confusions and enhance their understanding of statistical concepts. The operating hours of the centre are:
- Mondays, 11am to 2.30pm
- Tuesdays, 3pm to 5pm
- Wednesdays, 10am to 1pm
- Thursdays, 3pm to 5pm
- Fridays, 11am to 1pm

Faculty Positions (Regular Positions)
Applications are invited for regular positions in Statistics. A PhD in Statistics or a related field is required. The Department is considering several possible appointments. One is a Professorial level appointment in any area of statistics. The others are appointments at any level in statistics or biostatistics. For the Professorial level appointment, the applicant should have an outstanding record in research, and demonstrated leadership in teaching and service. For the other appointments the applicants should have demostrated potential for excellence in research, teaching and service. There is no deadline for applications but the search will continue until all positions are filled.
Applicants should send an application letter and a CV and arrange for at least THREE reference letters to be sent directly to the Department.

Head Of Department Position
We are seeking a distinguished candidate to be appointed as tenured full Professor and Head of Department. The candidate must have demonstrated leadership and management experience in senior positions in a major university and be a world-class researcher in an active area of contemporary statistics or probability. He/she should have the ability, vision and commitment to lead the Department to be among the world's best.

International Biometric Society
Singapore region of International Biometric Society (http://www.biometricsociety.org/regions/) has been established this year with 15 founding members. Li Jialiang is the correspondent for member activities and other information.
United Nations Population Projections Based on New Statistical Models (23/06/2011)
The United Nations Population Division released its 2010 revision of population projections, which were covered by the New York Times: "U.N. Forecasts 10.1 Billion People by Century’s End". Leontine Alkema was involved in the development of new statistical models to project the total fertility rate for all countries, which were used in the population projections. This research will be published in Demography in August 2011 (Alkema, Raftery, Gerland, Clark, Pelletier, Buettner and Heilig: "Probabilistic Projections of the Total Fertility Rate for All Countries").

Influenza research covered by Reuters, AFP
Research by Roman Carrasco, Alex Cook and others in NUS, Duke NUS and elsewhere in Singapore on antiviral stockpiling for influenza pandemic preparedness has been the subject of articles in Reuters and AFP and been syndicated to several thousand new outlets worldwide. The research has been published online in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.
Joint Research On Casino Gaming
Casino Regulatory Authority of Singapore (CRA) will collaborate with the National University of Singapore (NUS) Department of Mathematics and Department of Statistics and Applied Probability to promote joint research and development activities in the area of mathematical research relating to casino gaming. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed yesterday at the 2nd CRA Gaming Technology Forum. Click here for more details.
First annual DSAP graduate student conference
The first annual DSAP graduate students' conference will be held at IMS on Thursday 27 January. A timetable is available here. Directions to IMS can be found here. Attendance by non-research students is by invitation
Computational Genomics Workshop: PyCogent/Qiime
A computational genomics workshop will be held 29th November to 1st December 2010 at the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability. It will cover PyCogent and Qiime, two powerful tools for analyzing large genomic data sets.

Laha Travel Award
Our Phd student, Fang Xiao has won a Laha Travel Award of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) to present his research paper (written jointly with Prof Louis Chen and Prof Qi-Man Shao) at the IMS Annual Meeting at Gothenburg, Sweden, in August 2010.

The NUS Statistics Committee is a by-students-for-students committee with the purpose of fostering a unified community amongst the students in the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability through organizing student initiated social, intellectual and other events. Statistics Advice Centre
The Statistics Advice Centre will operate from 18 August 2009 onwards. The centre offers free, advisory service to all NUS researchers (staff and students) to discuss matters of a statistical nature. The service will be offered on a walk-in, first-come first-serve basis.
The consultants are available to discuss your statistical problems with you on Tuesdays, 10.00am to 11.30am, and Thursdays, 10.00am to 11.30am.
If you wish to visit the Statistics Advice Centre, please go to the front desk of the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability located at Blk S16, Level 7 to be directed to the consultant on duty.
Please note that the service offered by the Statistics Advice Centre is purely advisory. The consultant will be happy to discuss with you any problems of a statistical nature that you may have. Such problems include, but are not limited to, concerns about the design of an experiment that you are planning to do, problems that you have with data that you have collected, discussion of appropriate statistical analyses, and help with the interpretation of output of statistical packages. Any service required beyond mere advice and discussion will have to be arranged with the Statistics Consulting Centre on a collaborative and/or paid basis.
